Museum of Modern Art (MAM)
The Curador Curado exhibition, in my opinion, alerts us to the need to adapt the traditional role of historian curator from the 50s and 60s that still predominates in Latin America. The new languages and experimental media of contemporary art force the current curator to evolve towards new curatorial methodologies that are more up to date with the times. Some contemporary art curators in the Caribbean, for example, continue to use the traditional “concept/list” formula in conceptualizing an art exhibition.
In many cases, the methodology of presenting a thesis in advance relegates works of art to serving as mere illustrations. To achieve a comprehensive interpretation of the art that is being produced today and for it to respond effectively to the needs of certain media and questions, an organic collaboration between the curator and the artist is required from the conceptualization stage of a project.
